Healing with Data: How SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital is Transforming Pediatric Care
Why Denodo
Denodo provided SJD the unified data foundation needed to modernize care delivery, enable AI-driven decision-making, and accelerate research – without disrupting existing systems.
- Risk scores now updated every 30 seconds, replacing 8–12 hour manual intervals across the critical care units
- AI-driven analytics provide live scores for sepsis, bronchiolitis, and clinical decompensation
- Governed, OMOP- and FHIR-compatible data model enables real-time access for care teams and accelerates research collaboration
- Robust governance and security ensure trusted, compliant access to sensitive and anonymized data – protecting personal patient information at all times
Overview
SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital, one of Europe’s leading maternal and child hospitals, is transforming pediatric care through its “liquid hospital” vision – delivering care that keeps children comfortable at home whenever possible, while real-time data from bedside and remote sources is securely transmitted to, monitored, and governed by the hospital. Powered by the Denodo Platform and AWS, clinicians make faster, data-driven decisions to improve pediatric outcomes.
Challenges
Manual processes and disconnected systems limited SJD’s ability to deliver timely care. Vital signs were analyzed only every 8–12 hours, risk scores were calculated in Excel, and critical data like genomics and real-time monitoring weren’t integrated.
Solution
SJD built a real-time data architecture using Denodo as the semantic layer and AWS as the cloud foundation. This enabled live clinical risk scoring, unified access to hospital systems, and secure data sharing for both care teams and researchers.
