KDDI is the second-largest telecommunications company in Japan and a Global Fortune 500 company offering a wide range of services worldwide, from individual mobile communications to corporate network services and Internet backbones.

Challenges

KDDI, which builds and operates numerous networks for both the general public and businesses, including cellular networks, experienced severe network outages during the 2016 sinkhole incident in front of Hakata Station. This profoundly affected its services, causing substantial interruptions and necessitating considerable manual effort to collect the necessary data. At the time, the data needed to respond effectively was scattered across a variety of systems, requiring extensive time and labor to manage. This pivotal incident highlighted the need for a unified data management system to handle disaster recovery and ensure continuous service delivery.

Solution

KDDI adopted the Denodo Platform, which enabled the consolidation and integration of dispersed data across the necessary internal systems. The Denodo Platform provided real-time data availability, crucial for disaster recovery and service continuity, by connecting over 20 types of databases and enabling future expansions. The implementation was completed smoothly within three months, demonstrating the platform's efficiency and reliability. The Denodo Platform enabled KDDI to create a self-service portal at which users could independently verify contract details, service information, traffic data, and more, and this lead to enhanced user satisfaction. It significantly reduced the manual effort and time required for data verification by providing a unified, real-time data management system.

Benefits

The Denodo Platform, built on a foundation of data virtualization, brought significant benefits to KDDI, including enhanced operational efficiency and user satisfaction through streamlined data management. It reduced manual data verification efforts, provided real-time data access, and provided seamless disaster recovery. Additionally, the platform's low-cost implementation and maintenance made it a cost-effective solution, and it enabled KDDI to maintain high service standards while improving decision-making.
